Polycarbonate from Bisphenol-A has been studied as a dosimeter to meas
ure doses of gamma-rays. Ultraviolet spectral changes of irradiated po
lycarbonate in chloroform solution were recorded. The optical density
of irradiated polycarbonate changes linearly corresponding to the incr
ease in dose up to 1230 kGy. The changes in molecular weight of irradi
ated samples were determined by the viscometry method using an Ostwald
viscometer and G-breakage values were also estimated. Thermogravimetr
ic analysis of unirradiated and irradiated samples showed that there i
s no discernible change in thermal stability of polycarbonate up to do
ses of 400 kGy as demonstrated by a comparison of percentage weight lo
ss of irradiated and control samples. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.
