In recent years Mexico City's authorities have tried to control and im
prove street trading and clean up the area. Their actions have provoke
d the street trading community, and a bitter conflict over the use of
city space has arisen. The scene of the conflict is the highly symboli
c Centro Historico, a UNESCO world heritage site, home to part of Mexi
co's architectural and cultural patrimony, important residential, comm
ercial and political administrative area. This paper presents the oppo
sing parties' arguments and comments on the resulting stalemate and wh
at this represents for the future development of the Centro Historico
and Mexico in general.
