The aim of this study was to translate into Spanish the Mania Rating S
cale. Diagnostic and concurrent validity and reliability were determin
ed. Methods Patients were recruited from the Psychiatric Hospital ''Fr
ay Bernardino Alvarez'' in Mexico City Using the Composite Internation
al Diagnostic Interview (CIDI) to assess diagnosis, two groups were as
signed: 26 patients with active mania and 28 schizophrenics used as co
ntrols. The Mania Rating Scale was applied to all subjects in two diff
erent occasions. The internal consistency was determined and the best
diagnostic cut-off point was established to reach and adequate diagnos
is using the CIDI as gold standard. Results The instrument's Cronchach
's alpha was 0.84 and the test-retest reliability, 0.98. The best cut-
off point was reached at 28 points with 96% sensibility values and 100
% specificity. The total sum of the scale was significantly higher in
manic patients than in schizophrenic subjects. Conclusion The Spanish
version of the Mania Rating Scale is reliable and valid for the clinic
al assessment of mania.
