Secondary analysis of qualitative data is a valid mode of clinical inq
uiry. However, there is limited information available on its use in nu
rsing. This article describes the use of secondary analysis for a stud
y of family caregivers of relatives with dementia. The advantages, lim
itations, and application of secondary analysis are outlined; data man
agement, analysis, and rigor are also discussed. The article concludes
that this method is cost-effective, decreases respondent burden, and
is a useful research method for students. However, the secondary analy
st must be aware of the limitations of using secondary analysis of qua
litative data.
