A numerical method for solving the Euler equations based on the method
of lines has been implemented on networked engineering workstations a
nd a multi Transputer system using a domain decomposition approach. Th
e message passing is handled by PVM (Parallel Virtual Machine) softwar
e. The present approach is tested for both 2D and 3D test problems gov
erned by the Euler equations. For dynamic load balancing and reduction
of computational work a strategy of selective solutions of subdomains
based on local residuals has been employed. For steady supersonic and
hypersonic flow problems, a reduction of 40-50% computational work an
d 12-1% of CPU time has been achieved. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science B.V.
