First biological models of radiation action were based on the average
energy deposited in the cell nucleus. Later theories have stressed the
importance of the energy deposition at the nanometer level. Clusters
of ionizations generated by K-electron removal seem to be a highly eff
icient mechanism for the induction of cell inactivation by heavy ions.
