Abstract
Poincare sections are used to classify rigid-body motion into quasi-pe riodic and chaotic solutions. A seven-dimensional parameter set is int roduced for the attitude and kinematic variables, which is reduced to a two-dimensional set which is amenable to phase-plane analysis. This analysis is applied to the motion of a free asymmetric rigid body in s pace. The extension to gravity-gradient torque problems is shown.
