Abstract
Simple order-of-magnitude expressions derived from the forward-scatter ing small-angle approximation show that the scattering modulation tran sfer function (MTF) contributes insignificantly to the overall atmosph eric MTF in most practical imaging applications except for precipitati on, ice-crystal clouds, and some rare advection-fog or high-wind deser t storm events with particles in the size range of tens of micrometers .
