Oscillator strengths for the four lowest S-4(o)-P-4 transitions of neu
tral nitrogen are calculated in a non-orthogonal framework which allow
s the 2s and 2p (and other) orbitals to be represented by radial funct
ions which are different for different states even within the same LS-
symmetry. Previous calculations of these transitions have met with dif
ficulties in obtaining agreement between the length and velocity forms
of the oscillator strength which have been overcome only by using sev
eral thousand configurations in the representation of the wavefunction
s. In our work we have obtained comparable agreement with these extens
ive calculations and also with experiment by using a total of only 26
configurations within our non-orthogonal procedure.
