An [11][13]fulvalene derivative, -dimethylcyclotrideca-1,3,9,11-tetrae
ne-5,7-diyne, has been synthesized. Examination of H-1 and C-13 NMR sp
ectra indicates that the compound shows no detectable ring-current eff
ect in nonpolar solvents arising from 10 pi- and 14 pi-electron system
s, which is verified by X-ray crystallographic structural analysis. In
a polar solvent, [H-2(6)]dimethyl sulfoxide, a small contribution of
the dipolar resonance structure is suggested.
