Abstract
A mixed variational formulation for the two-dimensional magnetostatic problem involving both the magnetic field and the magnetic displacemen t field is presented and analyzed. Such a formulation is obtained by m inimizing the error in the constitutive equation and imposing as const raints the canonical equations. A numerical discretization by means of ''edge'' and ''face'' elements is proposed together with a stability analysis and error estimates.
