Abstract
The bonding properties of rare earth metal boron carbide compounds are analyzed by means of extended Huckel tight-binding and ab initio calc ulations. Results indicate that these compounds san he described in fi rst approximation as being built of cumulene-like BxCy anionic units i nteracting with not fully oxidized metallic cations.
