We present a two-particle cluster variation theory to treat the inhomo
geneous nematic system confined by two parallel planes which align the
surface molecules perpendicular to them. Numerical calculations are m
ade for a film composed of 20 molecular layers. The nematic-isotropic
transition temperatures for typical values of the strength of the surf
ace field are given and the layer dependences of the order parameter a
re shown. The Monte Carlo simulation data are needed to demonstrate ou
r results.
