Abstract
We consider a simple model of a metallic nanowire, consisting of a fre e electron gas confined within hard-wall boundaries and connected to b anks on either side. Similar models have been widely used to discuss c onductance properties of nanowires and point contacts. Here we show th at the same model has implications for the mechanical stability of the wire and its work function, and that it possibly induces Jahn-Teller- type distortions in the wire cross section.
