The suturing of port sites measuring at least 10 mm in diameter follow
ing laparoscopy can prevent the incarceration of small bowel and/or om
entum and scar hernias. This means that all port sites remaining after
using trocars of at least 10 mm need to be carefully closed by suturi
ng. In the case of oncological procedures in particular, it is importa
nt to ensure that the bite of the suture needle includes the peritoneu
m, to avoid leaving a fresh peritoneal wound offering favourable condi
tions for the implantation of tumour cells. The technique described he
re for port site suturing involves all the layers of the abdominal wal
l, including the peritoneum, and may thus help to prevent port site me
tastases.
