Ms. Blouin et al., HAEMONCHUS PLACEI AND HAEMONCHUS-CONTORTUS ARE DISTINCT SPECIES BASEDON MTDNA EVIDENCE, International journal for parasitology, 27(11), 1997, pp. 1383-1387
Debates continue over the extent to which the parasitic trichostrongyl
ids Haemonchus placei and Haemonchus contortus hybridise in nature, an
d whether they deserve species status. Mitochondrial ND4 gene sequence
s from individuals of each putative species collected from populations
around the United States indicate that the two species are highly dif
ferentiated at the mtDNA level. Furthermore, there was no evidence of
introgressive hybridisation occurring in wild populations. (C) 1997 Au
