The structure of cylindrical cavity coupling with rectangular waveguid
es through large apertures on the cavity's sidewall is studied in deta
il. The fields in the cavity is properly expanded by derived mode func
tions. By making reasonable approximation of the boundary conditions,
the process of derivation and the formation of the characteristic equa
tion is greatly simplified. The characteristic equation and model coef
ficients are obtained. The reliability of the derived characteristic e
quation is tested. Numerical results of characteristic frequency and q
uality factor changing with dimensions of coupling holes are given.
