Two Turkish oil shales were extracted at room temperature with N-methy
lpyrrolidone and with a mixture of N-methylpyrrolidone and carbon disu
lfide. The extracts were analysed by chromatography and spectroscopy.
The aromatic compounds contained small clusters of aromatic rings high
ly substituted with branched alkyl groups. The alkane geomarkers are c
onsistent with immature sediments derived from terrestrial higher plan
ts and aquatic material deposited under saline conditions. (C) 1997 El
