FT-IR spectra are reported for mixtures of uracils with relatively lar
ge amounts of hydrogen chloride in annealed Ar matrices. The observati
on of spectral characteristics typical for C=O+ ... Cl- ... (HCl)n spe
cies demonstrates that hydrogen bonding of one or more additional prot
on donor molecules to the rather strong 1:1 complex C = O ... HCl lead
s to partial proton transfer. Isotopic ratios obtained from HCl/DCl di
lution experiments support the spectral assignments and analysis. The
identity of the counter anion [Cl ... (HCl)n] is discussed.
