Abstract
By 2005, or sooner, the three billion code letters of a representative human genome will be known, along with the locations of all of its ge nes. Even today, however, the work is greatly accelerating identificat ion of disease-related genes. One outcome will be tests for genetic co mponents of risk in the majority of common illnesses. In the longer ru n, genetic discoveries will surely lead to new treatments.
