Abstract
We present a simple generic model which reproduces the salient feature s of the observations of Beauchamp et al. [Phys. Rev. B 52, 13 025 (19 95); Phys. Rev. Lett. 75, 3942 (1995)] on the effect of heavy-ion irra diation on the local magnetic response and relaxation rate of YBa2Cu3O 7-delta single crystals. The model assumes that j(c) vs H, although al tered by the irradiation, remains continuous and the decay rate of the critical currents is diminished below the matching field Hg.
