The initial curves for magnetization (M) versus field (H) for several
soft ferromagnetic materials are measured at room temperature. It is o
bserved that the M-H curves of different materials almost collapse int
o a single curve when the experimental results are replotted in terms
of reduced magnetization (M/M(s)) and reduced field (H/H-k), where M(s
) is the saturation magnetization and H, is the anisotropy field defin
ed as work done to magnetize the substance up to M, divided by M(s). U
sing phenomenology, an equation of state (M/M(s) versus H) is proposed
and is found to describe the experimental data well.
