It is demonstrated experimentally that the CO/H2O, CH4/H2O, and C2H6/H
2O ratios found by Mumma et al. (1996) in Comet Hyakutake could be obt
ained by the trapping of these gases in water ice which was formed at
64-66 K. The formation of the ice particles which formed comets, eithe
r in the warm outskirts of the interstellar cloud or in the outer part
of the solar nebula, is discussed. C3H8 is predicted to exist in come
ts as well. (C) 1997 Academic Press.
