Measures in transportation planning aim at slowing-down the increase o
f traffic and at a reduction of private cars in a modal split. There o
bviously is considerable spatial influence as to modal split, but chan
ges in modal split (1982-1994) are much more marked than changes in sp
atial structure. These changes are mainly caused by behavioural change
(to be interpreted as the spreading of ''urban lifestyles'') and an i
ncreasing flexibility in activity timing, with an increase in the dist
ances travelled, thus reducing the competitiveness of public transport
. In order to achieve the planning objectives a bundle of measures hav
e to be introduced simultanously. A decentral concentration of populat
ion in specified centres in the surroundings of the city of Salzburg i
s of paramount importance and has to be accomplished by improving publ
ic transport in these centres and by measures for multimodal travel (B
ike&Ride, Park&Ride).
