A series of new homo- and hetero-leptic copper(I) complexes have been
prepared with various substituted polychelating 1,4,5,8,9,12-hexaazatr
iphenylene (hat) derivatives. The homoleptic complexes, the stability
of which is strongly related to the number and nature of the substitue
nts borne by their two identical acyclic hat ligands, appeared in gene
ral less stable than their corresponding heteroleptic complexes prepar
ed with the similar hat acyclic, ligand and a macrocycle derived from
a 1,10-phenanthroline. The results show clearly that by tethering the
first chelate to a macrocycle of adequate size, more stable complexes
can be obtained. All the complexes described were characterized by fas
t atom bombardment and electrospray mass spectrometry.
