Abstract
We examined the influence of serotonin (5-HT), an important state-depe ndent neuromodulator, on synaptic transmission to hypoglossal motoneur ons (HMs). Our data demonstrate that 5-HT acts presynaptically to inhi bit excitatory (glutamatergic) synaptic currents recorded in HMs. We d iscuss this result in relation to the role of 5-HT in state-dependent modulation of respiration-related activity in HMs.
