Abstract
This paper presents first results of the Coronal Diagnostic Spectromet er (CDS) recently launched aboard the Solar and Heliospheric Observato ry (SOHO). CDS is a twin spectrometer, operating in the extreme ultrav iolet range 151-785 Angstrom. Thus, it can detect emission lines from trace elements in the corona and transition region which will be used to provide diagnostic information on the solar atmosphere. In this pap er, we present early spectra and images, to illustrate the performance of the instrument and to pave the way for future studies.
