A practical sensor-based monitoring strategy is developed and discusse
d in terms of tool wear monitoring as the feature application. The str
ategy is characterized by the synthesized signal-interpretation with s
ensor information generated at neighbouring time points. Based on care
ful consideration on signal processing scheme, wear progress, and the
effect of cutting conditions, several synthesis methods are provided a
nd evaluated with machining data. In experiments, the monitoring perfo
rmance is significantly improved by the synthesis, and is close to one
required for the implementation in industries. Also, detailed suggest
ions to enhance practicality and reliability of the synthesis methods
are made.
