Bl. Stone et al., THE DIAGNOSTIC YIELD OF ACID-FAST-BACILLUS SMEAR-POSITIVE SPUTUM SPECIMENS, Journal of clinical microbiology, 35(4), 1997, pp. 1030-1031
The yield of mycobacterial culture from acid-fast-bacillus smear-posit
ive sputum specimens was 387 of 439 (88.2%). Forty-nine of 52 culture-
negative specimens came from patients on treatment. We conclude that t
he yield of culture from smear-positive sputum specimens is very high
and that only two acid-fast-bacillus smear-positive specimens are need
ed for the initial evaluation of pulmonary mycobacteriosis.
