Abstract
This paper examines the diffusion of carbon under the condition induce d by rapid heating of cast irons and attempts mathematical model of th e process. The work investigates the diffusionless mechanism of austen itization of above mentioned materials and is closely related to the w ork [1] and [2] dealing the process in carbon and alloy steels. Theore tic examinations are used for determining critical heating rates of ca st irons during their heat treatment by concentrated energy sources. T he critical heating rates established in cast irons with graded conten ts of carbon were compiled into kinetic diagram which can serve in pra ctice for determining the optimum rates for transfromational surface h ardening of these materials.
