A 2.5-year-old male Chocolate Labrador Retriever was evaluated for sei
zures, facial twitching; and rhythmic contractions of the tongue. Tong
ue contractions remained persistent when the dog was anesthetized, con
sistent with myoclonus. Computerized tomography imaging of the cranial
vault was normal and a lymphocytic pleocytosis was found upon cerebel
lomedullary cerebrospinal fluid analysis. Cerebrospinal fluid and seru
m titers were positive for canine distemper virus antibody. Cerebrospi
nal fluid protein electrophoresis evaluation indicated that the blood-
brain barrier was intact suggesting intrathecal production of antibody
in response to the presence of the virus.
