The distribution of virus-vector nematodes has been studied in detail
in Europe. The resulting maps were used to determine the extremes of t
he European geographical range of Longidorus elongatus and Xiphinema d
iversicaudatum. The CLIMEX computer programme was used to fit a model
to the known European distributions of these nematode species and proj
ect these to ascertain their potential world distribution. Implication
s for the application of the CLIMEX model to refine quarantine regulat
ions for other plant-parasitic nematodes are discussed.
