The magnetic relaxation times of the nuclei H-1, H-2, and C-13 forming
the methyl group of methanol have been measured in the mixture 20 mol
% methanol + 80 mol% water which also contained LiCl in various amount
s (1.73, 7.3 and 14.5 (m) over bar). Measurements were partly performe
d at two frequencies and at variable temperatures so that at the lowes
t temperatures the relaxation maxima were passed. It turned out that i
n all cases the maximum relaxation rate was lower than expected making
thus the conventional partial rigid body relaxation theory invalid. T
he proton and deuteron relaxation times of the solvent water + methano
l-hydroxyl and the Li-7 relaxation times were also measured in the sam
e temperature range. We obtained the result that the rotational correl
ation times of all solvent components (including LiCl) and the observe
d slow motion residuum in the fast motion of the methyl group are equa
l.
