The Chemical Abstracts Service Registry System (CASRS) has a relativel
y unknown but very useful feature; with the exception of one situation
, it has the capability of multiple-level source-based polymer registr
ation, i.e., it will register a source-based polymer within a source-b
ased polymer. The CASRS registers macromonomers in File Registry as si
ngle-component substances. In contrast, macromonomers registered in th
e DuPont SCION proprietary database by the CASRS are represented as mu
lticomponent substances. Single-level CASRS registration of comb polym
ers in SCION currently results in loss of identity of macromonomers as
searchable components. Multilevel source-based registration provides
a way to register multicomponent macromonomers as components of comb p
olymers so that their registration numbers become part of comb polymer
structure records.
