Ma. Khan et al., IMPROVEMENT OF JUTE YARN THROUGH IN-SITU COPOLYMERIZATION BY UV-RADIATION, Polymer-plastics technology and engineering, 36(2), 1997, pp. 285-296
Methylmethacrylate (MMA) has been copolymerized in situ under ultravio
let (UV) radiation with jute yarn in the presence of MeOH used as swel
ling solvent. Effect of additives such as functional monomers, urea, a
nd plasticizer on the improvement of rheological properties of the jut
e yarn has been studied. Tensile strength was enhanced by 58% while el
ongation of the treated yarn increased by 69%, These results were comp
ared with those obtained under gamma irradiation. It was found that th
e UV radiation induced better properties in yarn.
