A series of reactive polymeric supports for the covalent binding of en
zymes was prepared from methacrylamide in conjunction with various cop
olymerized monomers. In all cases the specific surface area of the pre
pared copolymer particles increased with the ratio of crosslinker to m
onomer. The polymers containing oxirane and aldehyde groups were promi
sing for direct binding of beta-galactosidase, whereas the supports co
ntaining amino groups also qualified for enzyme immobilization with gl
utaraldehyde.
