The changing nature of computing and communications technologies has c
ritical implications for the future delivery of education. There are t
hree crucial issues. First, the delivery of distance education, studen
t remediation, performance assessment and accreditation through mechan
isms such as the World Wide Web (WWW). Second, the development of guid
elines which will allow designers to embed sound pedagogic principles
into computer-based education provision. Third, the development of sui
table electronic performance support systems to support student and st
aff activities within such environments. This paper addresses these pr
oblems through a discussion of the underlying processes. Three case st
udies are then presented which illustrate how these ideas have been pr
actically applied and the impact that such work has on the wider probl
ems of knowledge sharing through electronic course delivery within a u
niversity setting. This work provides a powerful framework for future
knowledge sharing on a global scale.
