J. Hofmann et al., ON THE CORRELATION OF MAGNETIC-FIELD STRENGTH AND INCLINATION WITH CONTINUUM BRIGHTNESS OF A SUNSPOT PENUMBRA, Astronomy and astrophysics, 284(1), 1994, pp. 269-275
A fairly regular sunspot penumbra has been observed near disk center u
sing a Stokes V polarimeter at the German Vacuum-Tower-Telescope in Iz
ana, Tenerife. We obtained two-dimensional spectral data by scanning t
he limbside sector of the penumbra in steps of 1 arcsecond with the sl
it oriented parallel to the solar limb. From Stokes V and Stokes I spe
ctra of four magnetically sensitive lines (Fe I5247.1 angstrom, Cr I52
47.6 angstrom, Fe I5250.2 angstrom, and Fe I5250.7 angstrom) recorded
with 1024 x 1024 pixel CCD cameras we have determined several magnetic
parameters. The results of a correlation analysis show a clear relati
on between continuum brightness and magnetic field inclination, field
lines beeing flatter in the dark penumbral filaments. We also find a c
orrelation between field strength and brightness; this correlation is
not uniform across the penumbra, however.
