Microbial biotransformations of various steroids are reviewed. Develop
mental studies on hydroxylation, carbon-carbon bond cleavage, enzymati
c catalysis in nonaqueous solvents, use of cyclodextrin medium, cell i
mmobilization, and new microbial reactions are highlighted. Various st
eroid substrates, their metabolites and the microorganisms used for th
e transformations are compiled covering the literature for the period
1992-1995. (C) 1997 by Elsevier Science Inc.
