Abstract
We discuss the possible mechanisms responsible for ferromagnetic order ing in transition metal oxides and the interplay between electrical tr ansport and magnetic order. We emphasize the role of orbital degrees o f freedom, electron correlation effects, local lattice distortions and the oxygen 2p bands in high oxidation state TM oxides. For illustrati on of the physics we discuss several specific materials like Eu chalco genides, magnetic semiconductors, La manganates and CrO2 among others. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.
