In Abrikosov superconducting flux flow transistors the voltage at the
terminals of microbridges across which vortices run is modulated by th
e magnetic field generated by the current flowing in a near-by control
line. In this paper the basic principles of these components are deve
lopped and the relation between the change in the critical current of
the microbridges and the control magnetic field is established as well
as the factors determining the transistor gain. The connection betwee
n the different types of current-voltage characteristics which are mea
sured on the microbridges and the different regimes which are possible
for the vortex motion is developped, emphazising the importance of th
e pinning phenomenon. The feasibility of the device is discussed.
