Pb. Rosenquist et al., TOURETTE SYNDROME-ASSOCIATED WITH MENTAL-RETARDATION - A SINGLE-SUBJECT TREATMENT STUDY WITH HALOPERIDOL, American journal of mental retardation, 101(5), 1997, pp. 497-504
A Tic Checklist and direct observation tic measurement procedure were
developed for the assessment of Tourette syndrome in individuals with
mental retardation. Using a single-subject reversal design, we applied
this assessment method to the evaluation of haloperidol treatment for
a subject with Tourette syndrome and severe mental retardation. Relat
ive to baseline, haloperidol 10 mg/day produced decreases of 66% in si
mple motor ties, 46% in complex motor ties, 45% in simple vocal ties,
and 50% in complex vocal ties. Improvement was also seen in careprovid
er ratings of tic severity, hyperactivity, and compulsive behaviors.
