Abstract
Gas-loaded Hermite-Gaussian laser linacs yield greater gain and intera ction lengths then vacuum linacs, however, optical beam and drift tube damage are not adequately alleviated in uniformly loaded devices. The se problems can be resolved if the loading is graded so as to accommod ate the phase velocity variation of the laser beam.
