Acceleration of a relativistic electron beam by the longitudinal field
component of a focused laser or microwave beam is optimal when the la
ser beam is radially polarized. The electron energy gain between focus
ing optical lenses with an arbitrary optical mode cannot greatly excee
d that available from a Gaussian beam of the same power. Off-axis tran
sverse forces focus and recollimate appropriately phased off-axis elec
trons over the acceleration length.
