The effect of extensified rape-seed crop rotations (less fertilizer-N
and pesticides) on nitrate leaching was studied for 3 years at 2 sites
in South-/East Lower Saxony. It could be proved that lowered producti
on intensity did not necessarily lead to mean nitrate leaching. Site s
pecific nitrate reduction was frequently more important. Enhanced nitr
ate leaching was often observed after cultivation of oilseed-rape, leg
umes, and sometimes winter wheat.
