Abstract
The geochemical relationship of Mn to organic cai bon, il on and alumi na was studied in Early Maastrichtian oil shales of southern Israel. T he Mn concentration appeals to mirror the intensity of anoxia in the b ottom waters of the depositional basin. If is proposed that the genera l trend of increasing Mn stratigraphically upward through the organic- rich sequence is a reflection of fluctuating redox conditions during t he transition fr om an anoxic to a more oxidizing regime.
