J. Wallen et Rh. Rubin, THE ROLE OF THE FAMILY IN MEDIATING THE EFFECTS OF COMMUNITY VIOLENCEON CHILDREN, Aggression and violent behaviour, 2(1), 1997, pp. 33-41
Increasingly, children are being exposed to violent events in their ne
ighborhoods or communities. Observing violent events or living in fear
of neighborhood violence can have negative effects for children's men
tal health and psychological development. This paper discusses the eff
ects of exposure to community violence on children and reviews researc
h on the role of families in mediating the effects of chronic exposure
to violence on children. Conditions that strengthen the family's abil
ity to support children's development under these circumstances are di
scussed. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.
