Abstract
During my long collaboration with Hiroomi Umezawa, which lasted for mo re than twenty-five years, I had the opportunity to be a part of the f oundation of thermofield dynamics. In this note I reconstruct the moti vation and the ideas that brought Hiroomi Umezawa to this new formulat ion.
