Abstract
The production rates of the J(P) = 1/2(+) octet Sigma baryons in hadro nic Z(0) decays have been measured using the OPAL detector at LEP. The inclusive production rates per hadronic Z(0) decay of the three isosp in states (including the respective antiparticle) have been separately measured for the first time: n(Sigma+) = 0.099 +/- 0.008 +/- 0.013 n( Sigma 0) = 0.071 +/- 0.012 +/- 0.013 n(Sigma-) = 0.083 +/- 0.006 +/- 0 .009, where the first error is statistical and the second is systemati c. Differential cross-sections are also presented for the Sigma(+) and Sigma(-) and compared with JETSET and HERWIG predictions. Assuming fu ll isospin symmetry, the average inclusive rate is: 1/3[n(Sigma++Sigma 0+Sigma-)] = 0.084 +/- 0.005 (stat.) +/- 0.008 (syst.).
