The relationship of class size and achievement in the subject history
was investigated on the basis of two representative samples of German
9th graders (study 1: k = 98 classes, study 2: k = 94 classes). In stu
dy 1 no mean difference in achievement between pupils attending larger
and smaller classes could be observed. In study 2 pupils stemming fro
m larger classes achieved slightly better than those stemming from sma
ller classes.
